Bein’ Bean at the Women’s March PDX 2017

Womens March 2017The Women’s March PDX was “huge” and it was awesome to take part in! Rick and I were proud to turn out in our pink pussyhats. I stitched up some the night before the march and we had a great time handing out the extras.

Just in case you wondering why pussyhats, here is an excerpt from the Pussyhat Project’s Mission Page:

Power of Pink
Pink is considered a very female color representing caring, compassion, and love – all qualities that have been derided as weak but are actually STRONG. Wearing pink together is a powerful statement that we are unapologetically feminine and we unapologetically stand for women’s rights.

Power of Pussy
We love the clever wordplay of “pussyhat” and “pussycat,” but yes, “pussy” is also a derogatory term for female genitalia. We chose this loaded word for our project because we want to reclaim the term as a means of empowerment. In this day and age, if we have pussies we are assigned the gender of “woman.” Women, whether transgender or cisgender, are mistreated in this society. In order to get fair treatment, the answer is not to take away our pussies, the answer is not to deny our femaleness and femininity, the answer is to demand fair treatment. A woman’s body is her own. We are honoring this truth and standing up for our rights.”

Me and my Buddy in the Pink

More than a million women around the world joined together to support woman’s rights in marches studded with signs voicing extreme disapproval with Trump’s lewd behavior and anti-women’s rights policies. Trump managed to pivot some of the media focus away from this “unpresidented” show of protest against him by presenting “alternative facts” regarding the numbers of attendees of his inauguration. Thank you Kellyann Conway for that new classic phrase.

Women’s marches: More than one million protesters vow to resist President Trump

What’s next? More action – Trump is just getting started and so are we. The Women’s March website has posted:
“We did it! On January 21, over 5 Million of us worldwide and over 1 Million in Washington, D.C., came to march, speak and make our voices heard. But it doesn’t end here – now is not the time to hang up our marching shoes – it’s time to get our friends, family and community together and make history.

EVERY 10 DAYS WE WILL TAKE ACTION ON AN ISSUE WE ALL CARE ABOUT, STARTING TODAY.”
